Max’s serene, comfortable, and fun life in a Manhattan apartment takes a surprising turn when his owner, Katie, adopts a humongous mongrel named Duke from the pound. He develops a feeling of resentment towards Duke for not getting an undivided attention from Katie. Furious at Max for giving him an unfair treatment, Duke tries to leave Max in an alley, only to be ambushed by cats who remove their collars. They are soon caught by Animal Control. Thankfully, they are saved by a human-hating rabbit named Snowball. This forces them to pretend to hate humans, too. When Snowball finds out about this, Max and Duke must save themselves from the impending danger.

movie facts

Renaud became attached to The Secret Life of Pets in 2012, while he was working on Despicable Me 2 as a co-director. It began as an idea pitched by Illumination’s CEO Chris Meledandi. Renaud came on board with the idea, but he and his team were quite uncertain about what kind of story it would be. At one point, they were on talks about making it a murder mystery. They eventually went with making it more relatable for the public. The Secret Life of Pets premiered on June 16, 2016, at the Annecy Annecy International Animated Film Festival and went into the U.S. theaters on July 8, 2016.
