Jonas Taylor leads a rescue team to save a group of sailors. While approaching the sunken nuclear submarine, Jonas and the crew find themselves on a doomed mission as the vessel is under attack by a mythical creature. Upon the failure of the mission, Taylor finds himself at a loss when no one believes what he has seen. After being dishonorably discharged and divorced from his wife, Taylor is faced with the difficulty to prove what he saw was real. A year later, Taylor finds himself answer the call of the Mana One, a research ship trapped at the bottom of the ocean. Now, he must face his fears and confront the giant creature.

Megalodon, which means 'big tooth', is a shark that is believed to have lived 23 to 2.6 million years ago. It was once believed to be a relation to the great white shark, however current opinion finds it to be family of the Otodontidae, an extinct distant relative. The megalodon is believed to look like a large version of the great white and is believed to be one of the biggest and most powerful predators to have ever lived.

The Meg was released in 2018. This science fiction thriller was directed by Jon Turteltaub. The screenplay was written by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, and Erich Hoeber. The plot loosely follows the 1997 published book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten. Film rights to the book were initially purchased in the 1990s by Walt Disney. However, filming did not start until 2017. Visual effect works were done by Sony Imageworks, Image Engine and Scanline VFX. Sales from the opening of The Meg grossed $145.4 million in the United States and Canadian markets. Markets in other territories reached $384.8 for a total worldwide gross of $530.2 million. The production budget of the film was only $130 million. There is currently talk of a sequel to the film.
