movie facts

In America, the history of the Civil War entails the war fought between the United States of America and the Confederate States of America, the country being divided by the issue of slavery. The Confederates are made up of 11 southern states – Mississippi, Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisana, Texas, Georgia, Arkansas, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee – who formed their own country in order to move away from the northern states who had since abolished slaves. Jefferson Davis became appointed as the Confederates’ President. Abraham Lincoln was then President of the United States when the war was on-going. The battle was fought for four years, from 1861-1865, with Confederate armies surrendering on April 1865. The body count amassed more than 620,000 fallen men. It took 20 years to rehabilitate the southern states that were heavily affected by the war, known as the Reconstruction Era. With the loss of the Confederates, the northern states amended the constitution with the 13th Amendment (abolishing slavery), the 14th Amendment (citizens gain “equal protection under the law”), and the 15th Amendment (voting rights for black men).
