The Purge franchise centers around the concept of one night of unbridled criminality each year. The idea behind this night is that a single night of making crimes legal can help in stopping social unrest and satisfying a suspected need for crime and disorder. It is also a means to control the population and unemployment in the country. The US government is under new leadership, known as the New Founding Fathers of America, or the NFFA, who are the radicals behind the idea of an annual purge. The film focuses on the logic behind the origins of the horrifying tradition, but it also bears a similar semblance to the previous films. Several survivors are shown trying to simply survive by fighting off attackers for security. The plot also delves into the origins of the groups of masked attackers that have become a prevalent visual theme of the franchise.

movie facts

The First Purge continues the traditions set by the franchise to this point, and has been fairly well received by devoted fans, though critical reception was less positive. The franchise has grown as a whole quite a bit since the beginning. It has spawned four films, as well as a television series debuting the same year as The First Purge. The series explores some of the origins of the titular purge event, but it turns its focus on new characters not seen in the movies.

The movie is produced by Platinum Dunes, Michael Bay's production company, in conjunction with Jason Blum's company, Blumhouse Productions.
