The Big Sick had been in development for three years. Gordon and Nanijani drew inspiration from the real-life courtship between them before their marital union in 2007. The script has been popularly dubbed as semi-autobiographical since a large part of the film reflects real events in Gordon and Nanijani’s relationship. It garnered a total gross of $56 million worldwide against a production budget of $5 million, making a record as one of the second highest-grossing independent films of 2017. The Big Sick won critical acclaim from its critics, with American Film Institute dubbing it as one of the top 10 films of 2017. It also earned several awards and nominations, including a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes assigned the film a high approval rating of 98%. On Metacritic, The Big Sick received an average score of 86/100.
