Set in the late 1950s in the United States in an all-white neighborhood suburb, the first African-American family moves in, and this leads to a general uneasiness and fear in the community. The main plot revolves around the Lodge family and its patriarch, Gardner Lodge. Gardner lives with his disabled wife Rose, their son Nicky, and Rose’s sister Margaret. Tired of caring for Rose, he decides to use the unrest in the community as a cover to have his wife murdered. After her death, Margaret moves into the house and begins being a mother to Nicky, and a wife to Gardner. There was also a large life insurance policy on Rose that paid out to Gardner and Margaret. This leads to police officers considering that Gardner and Margaret are involved in the murder of Rose somehow. As the movie progresses the community realizes that it was not the African-American neighbors that killed Rose.

movie facts

Suburbicon is similar to a real-life event that happened in 1957 in Levittown, Pennsylvania. An African-American family moved into a suburb and shortly thereafter was a break-in. This led to everyone blaming the African American family and being violent towards them. However, just like the film, the African-American family was innocent of the crime that they were being blamed for. The film sheds a lot of light on the racism that existed in the 1950s in predominantly white areas.

about the movie
