The movie focuses on a supermarket that is full of talking anthropomorphic foods, spanning a wide range of different items. The central characters include, as the name of the movie implies in a very tongue-in-cheek manner, hotdogs and hotdog buns, who also happen to have a romantic relationship, in a nod towards sexual genitalia and innuendo. The tone and humor of the entire film lean in this direction as well, coating each situation with adult humor and a dark take on what might otherwise be seen as a typical kid-friendly animated film. But this is anything but kid-friendly, as the movie goes on, and several of the foods make their way to what they call the 'great beyond', being purchased and taken home by customers. And it's there that they realize the world is not as they once believed and they must fight to save themselves, and hopefully be reunited at the supermarket Shopwell's, where they can continue to live out their lives in peace and love.

movie facts

Aside from middling critical responses to the film, the movie's production came under fire following its release. Allegations of poor working conditions for the animators producing the film came to light, suggesting that Nitrogen Studios, who did most of the CG for the movie, was made to work long hours, and for relatively little pay. Animators were told that they must work overtime on the project, or they would be blacklisted, and nearly half of them ended up blacklisted and uncredited in the film's final release, potentially due to complaints about these working issues. It is believed that most of the movie's $19 million production budget going to the massive cast of Hollywood stars, with many of these actors being close friends, further reinforcing the idea that they cared more about spreading the money around to one another than to the little-known animation company that was doing the brunt of the actual production on the movie.
