After a laboratory accident Athena-1, a space station owned by Energyne is destroyed. The only survivor, Dr. Kerry Atkins is then tasked by the CEO Claire Wyden to retrieve find and return canisters containing a pathogen. Due to damage to the escape pod, Atkins is killed after retrieving the pathogen. The debris from the pod explosion exposes a number of animals across the US. Davis Okoye, a primatologist and form US Arm Special Forces soldier befriends a gorilla at the sanctuary where he works. The two form a method of communication which makes it all the more important that Okoye finds an antidote once his friend is infected. Not only must Okoye save his friend, but he must also save all of mankind from this destructive pathogen.

Hanabiko 'Koko' is well-known for her abilities to communicate with humans. Koko was born at the San Francisco Zoo. Her instructor and caregiver, Francine Patterson, focused on exposing the gorilla to the human language from a young age. The gorilla was also taught a modified version of sign language known as Gorilla Sign Language. At the time of Koko's death in 2018, it is reported she knew a total of 2,000 English spoken words in addition to the signed words.

The 2018 film Rampage is a science fiction film. The screenplay is based loosely on the video game series from Midway games of the same name. The director was Brad Peyton and the film stars Dwayne Johnson, Naomie Harris, Malin Åkerman, Jake Lacy, Joe Manganiello, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The April release from Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema was available in 2D, RealD 3D, and IMAX formats. The storyline and screenwriting were criticized but there was praise for the acting of Johnson and Morgan. The marking budget of the film was $140 million with a production budget of $120 million. The film made $101 million in the United States and Canada with a worldwide total sale of $428 million. Rampage was nominated for three Teen Choice Awards in the categories: Choice Sci-Fi Movie, Choice Sci-Fi Movie Actor, and Choice Sci-Fi Movie Actress.
