Netflix and Plan B Entertainment picked up the film with a budget of $50 million. Several independent South Korean theaters auspiciously screened the film. From 300, 953 sold tickets, the film's earnings amounted to a total of 2,271,855,400 KRW (2,128,019 USD). Initially, Okja received a negative response from its audience at the Cannes Film Festival in two instances. The first was when the audience saw the opening logo of Netflix at the beginning of the film. The second was during a technical glitch that caused the wrong projection of aspect ratio for the first seven minutes of the film. The organizers of the film later apologized for the glitch. Despite its initial negative reception, the film received a standing ovation that lasted for four minutes. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes garnered an 87% approval rating for Okja, while on Metacritic, the film received a weighted average score of 75/100 based on 36 critics.
