This disease causes Katie to have a life-threatening sensitivity to sunlight. Katie spends the days with her father Jack and best friend Morgan. Katie's life is lived at night after the sun sets. On one night, Katie comes across Charlie, her crush, as he plays guitar at the train station. Katie's dreams come true when Charlie asks her out on a date. When she has to leave suddenly, Katie leaves behind a notebook, which Charlie holds for her. The next day, when Charlie returns the notebook, he tells her of the injury he had which prevented him from receiving a scholarship from the University of California, Berkeley. movie facts

Xeroderma pigmentosum is a rare genetic disorder with only about 1 in 250,000 people in the United States affected. The disease acts by decreasing the person's ability to repair the damage done by UV light. A person with the disease may experience a sunburn after only minutes of exposure to the sunlight. Further complications include nervous system problems such as hearing loss, loss of intellectual function as well as seizures. Those with Xeroderma pigmentosum also have an increased risk of skin cancer. As many as half of those effects may have skin cancer by age 10. There is also an increased risk of brain cancers.
