Megan Leavey was born on October 28, 1983. She is a former Military Police K9 handler who served from 2003 to 2007. When she enlisted in the Marines. Leavey was initially stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. She was partnered with a military dog named Rex. The two went into two deployments in Iraq together. The first was in Fallujah in 2005, and then Ramadi in 2006, where the pair fell victim to an improvised explosive device and wounded them. After the bomb blast, Leavey received the Purple Heart and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with a 'V' device for her bravery and fortitude in combat. The tragic accident led Leavey to seek the adoption of Rex. Unfortunately, the explosion caused Rex to develop a facial palsy, a condition in which facial muscles at one side of the face become paralyzed or weak due to nerve damage. The conditioned prevented Rex to continue his duties as a bomb-sniffer. Leavey filed a petition to adopt Rex. In 2012, a spokesman at the Marine base at Camp Pendleton confirmed that security checks had been completed and that Rex was already suitable for adoption. Sadly, Rex passed away in December of that same year.
