The titular Mary, Queen of Scots was born December 8th, 1542. She was also known as Mary Stuart, or Mary I of Scotland. Her reign over Scotland ran from December of 1542 to July of 1567. Mary was only 6 days old when she inherited the throne from her father King James V after his passing. Mary married the Dauphin of France, Francis. He took the French throne as King Francis II in 1559. He however passed in December 1560. Mary went on to marry Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, her first cousin. The two birthed one son, James. In February 1567, her husband was found murdered in his garden. Mary has remarried shortly after. It was on July 24, 1567 when Mary gave up the throne in order to raise her son.

The film was based on John Guy's biography Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart. The film features the acting of Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie, Jack Lowden, and more. The film was released to mixed reviews. They were pleased with the acting skills as well as costumes, but there was a note of many severe historical inaccuracies. It was still nominated for 20 awards and went on to win the Hollywood Film Awards 2018 for Make-Up and Hairstyling of the Year as well as the 2018 Hollywood Music In Media Awards Best Original Score - Feature Film. The film budget was $25 million, with $37.9 million in worldwide sales.
