Jesus Christ Superstar is a whimsical musical retelling of the final days of the prophet Jesus Christ, loosely based on the Biblical passages telling of his betrayal by apostle Judas Iscariot, and death by the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate. The production is nearly entirely musical in nature, with each song covering a particular moment in the tale, from Judas' scepticism of Jesus' nature as the Messiah, and concern over his fame among the people, to his deal with the Roman empire, leading the local priests and Pontius Pilate to Jesus, and condemning him to death on the cross. All of this is relatively faithful to the general story as depicted in scripture but written in a more upbeat and whimsical way to suit the rock opera genre.
