movie facts

The fictional great white shark from Jaws may have created a terrifying image of sea-based creatures sweeping unknowing swimmers underneath blue waters and tearing them like sheets of paper, but these carnivorous swimmers aren’t the only ones who can take a nasty bite out of something – or someone. On land, you would never expect this animal to be a threat because they are considered to be “man’s best friend”, but the English Mastiff is one of the largest dog breeds in the world, and if they happen to chomp, you could feel 500 pounds of force coming down on you. In nature documentaries, scientists have long been inserting electrodes into the jaws of crocodiles. And the result? 4,000 pounds of force recorded in the bite of saltwater crocodiles found in northern Africa. Beating out the competition, and even the famed Jaws shark, is the 50-foot-long, 50-ton Megalodon, a prehistoric shark that has 10 times the bite force of its modern descendant, the great white shark. It peaks at 40,000 pounds of measurable force.

about the movie

Jaws is the famous 1975 thriller by director Steven Spielberg where a great white man-eating shark attacks guests on the beach of Amity Island. The ominous theme was created by composer John Williams, in order to suggest the shark’s presence, due to the mechanical sharks often malfunctioning. The film was given by Universal Pictures a wide release on over 450 theaters during June 20, 1975. Though going over its production budget totaling to $9 million, it was a box office hit with $470.7 million, being the highest-grossing film of the year before being surpassed by Star Wars in 1977.
