While at a Christian summer camp as a 10-year-old where he meets Shannon, played by Madeline Carroll, Bart Millard, played by J. Michael Finley, is abandoned by his mother. His father Arthur, played by Dennis Quaid, is abusive, and when Bart confronts him, he denies that this was the reason she left. Bart and Shannon begin dating in high school and, after getting injured playing football, decides to enroll in music class. After an altercation with his father, Shannon tries to get Bart to talk to her, but he instead withdraws, breaking up with her and leaving town. He eventually finds a band that is in need of a singer and joins them.

This film is the debut role for J. Michael Finley, and it is still his only role to date. It was nominated for several awards, most of the Christian variety, but it was nominated for a People’s Choice Award for Best Family Movie, though it did not win. It is the fourth highest-grossing music biographical film of all-time in the United States behind only Bohemian Rhapsody, Straight Outta Compton, and Walk the Line.

The film stars J. Michael Finley, Dennis Quaid, Madeline Carroll, Priscilla Shirer, Cloris Leachman, Trace Adkins, and Brody Rose. It was released to mixed reviews on March 16, 2018 grossing $85 million against a budget of only $7 million. It holds a 63% approval rating on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes while Metacritic has assigned it a weighted score of 30 out of 100. It did, however, receive mostly positive reviews among Faith-based reviewers.
