After his young daughter’s tragic death, Howard Inlet, played by Will Smith, becomes clinically depressed. He writes letters to the concepts of love, time, and death. The letters are intercepted by Sally, played by Ann Dowd, who is a private investigator hired by Howard’s business partners in an attempt to prove that he is emotionally unfit to run their company. They hire actors Brigitte (Helen Mirren), Raffi (Jacob Latimore), and Amy (Keira Knightly) to respond to and confront Howard about these letters. The plans are for Sally to record the encounter and then digitally alter the footage to erase the trio, making Howard appear mentally unstable so they can sell the company.

During filming, Will Smith’s father, who he is named after, was dying as he researched his role and the grief that it would take to play the part. He later said that working on the film the way he did was therapeutic for him in helping him deal with the loss of his father, who passed away 5 weeks before this film was released. During filming, Will Smith invited himself over to the house of Naomi Harris’ mom Lisselle Kayla in order to sample her Jamaican cooking. The cast bonded so much that Smith later stated that 'if we are all judged by the company we keep, then I want this cast with me for life.'
