After his young daughter’s tragic death, Howard Inlet, played by Will Smith, becomes clinically depressed. He writes letters to the concepts of love, time, and death. The letters are intercepted by Sally, played by Ann Dowd, who is a private investigator hired by Howard’s business partners in an attempt to prove that he is emotionally unfit to run their company. They hire actors Brigitte (Helen Mirren), Raffi (Jacob Latimore), and Amy (Keira Knightly) to respond to and confront Howard about these letters. The plans are for Sally to record the encounter and then digitally alter the footage to erase the trio, making Howard appear mentally unstable so they can sell the company.
