These robots serve as police enforcers, significantly lowering crime in the city, and operating with sophisticated artificial intelligence. However, one such robot is damaged, with his AI malfunctioning, and is sent to be destroyed. But before this can happen, the robot, Chappie, is stolen by a duo of criminals, with the plan to use him as a weapon against the other police robots. Chappie, the two bumbling criminals, and a young programmer from Tetravaal forced by the criminals to reprogram Chappie, all find themselves the targets of the government forces and Tetravaal who want their robot back. movie facts

Many parallels can be drawn between Chappie and Blomkamp's earlier film District 9, which was very highly regarded by film critics. Both movies are set in a dystopian science fiction version of Johannesburg, South Africa, and involve questionable government ethics in their handling of conflict and local criminal activity. Both films also star Sharlto Copley in their lead role, though providing voice work and animation reference for the titular robotic main character in Chappie. Blomkamp himself was born in South Africa, and so his appreciation for, and interest in the region's unique culture and people is a common theme amongst these films and his cinematic approach, in directing and writing.
