The film takes place 18 months after the battle between General Zod and Superman in Metropolis where the latter has become the center of attention of the public and the media. Batman, fearing that Superman is going to run amok with his actions left unchecked, takes it upon himself to act as a balance, trying to restore order. He sees Superman as a threat to humanity and decides to stop him before more of the world comes to ruin.

This film marks the first live-action film to feature mega superheroes, Batman and Superman, and it was also the first live-action appearance of the character Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot would go on to play the same character in the following year’s blockbuster Wonder Woman, which was a massive success. This film marks Ben Affleck’s first appearance as Bruce Wayne. He said, during an interview with Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, that he was warned by the studio that the reaction to his casting could be negative, and he was advised to avoid social media after the announcement was made. He also said that the studio showed him negative feedback made about other previous superhero castings.

It was released in the United States on March 25, 2016, to generally unfavorable reviews, though it did make $873.6 million against a budget of $250 million. It holds a 27% approval rating on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with Metacritic assigning it a score of 44 out of 100. It did spawn a direct sequel in November 2017 entitled Justice League, as well as several other spinoff films.
