Bad Times at the Royale takes place in Lake Tahoe in 1969. Several strangers, each with their own secrets to hide, check in at the El Royale hotel where they all meet the only employee of the hotel, concierge Miles Miller. The hotel guests include Dock O’Kelly – an aging robber suffering from dementia pretending to be a priest, Darlene Sweet - a struggling soul singer, Billy Lee – a charismatic cult leader, Emily and Cailee Summerspring – sisters trying to escape Billy Lee’s cult, and Dwight Broadbeck – an undercover FBI agent posing as a vacuum salesman. As the strangers’ lives intertwine on a fateful night, a large sum of money from one of Flynn’s old jobs and a film reel showing the death of a public figure become the central targets of all the guests. A series of violent interactions lead to the deaths of almost all the guests, with only O’Kelly and Sweet surviving.
