In 1995, a filmmaker comes to the jail where Tupac Shakur is being held to interview him. He tells his story of being the child of Black Panthers. Tupac learns about Black pride from his parents and sees unfair treatment of Blacks in his neighborhood. As he gets into his teenage years, he attends an arts high school and writes poetry for one of his friends. He starts a music career, and his mentor helps him get his own hip-hop albums produced. His songs were based on real stories that he heard about of people in his neighborhood, but the songs are considered to be very controversial and show hatred toward women. He later begins an acting career and also collaborates with other rap artists. He also regularly gets into trouble with the law. Eventually, he is found guilty of a crime and sent to jail, which is where the filmmaker encounters him. Once he is released from prison, he signs another record contract.
