STX Entertainment bought the rights to Adrift in February 2017, with Shailene Woodley and Baltasar Kormákur attached as the lead role and the director respectively. In April 2017, Miles Teller entered the project to join Woodley in the lead cast, but he had to drop the role due to scheduling conflicts. STX Entertainment released the film on June 1, 2018, in the U.S. Adrift earned a total gross of $60 million against a production budget of $35 million. In the U.S. and in Canada, the film was released alongside Action Point and Upgrade. Adrift generally received mixed reviews. Many critics specifically praised Woodley’s gripping performance and the film’s stunning cinematography but noted the narrative semblance to Titanic, The Perfect Storm, and Waterworld. At the People’s Choice Awards, Adrift and Woodley were shortlisted for Drama Movie of 2018 and Drama Movie Star of 2018 respectively.
