The film is an expansion of the old trope “be careful what you wish for.” Clare Shannon, played by Joey King, is a young girl whose father Johnathan, played by Ryan Phillippe, finds an old Chinese music box while dumpster diving. She deciphers one of the inscriptions to read “seven wishes” and casually wishes for her school bully Darcie to “rot.' Darcie is later admitted to the ICU with necrotizing fasciitis. Her dog is also later found that day having been eaten alive in the crawlspace by rats. Clare realizes her wishes come true but does not notice that they come with consequences.

movie facts

The film is loosely based on the 2004 Philippine movie Feng Shui. It is also loosely based on the W.W. Jacobs short story entitled The Monkey’s Paw, which was first published in England in a collection of short stories called The Lady of the Barge in 1902. It was voted to be included in the 2015 Black List, an annual survey of Hollywood’s not-yet-produced films that are generating buzz within the industry. Jerry O’Connell makes an uncredited appearance in this film as a previous owner of the music box named Alex. During his cameo, his real-life family can be seen in a picture in the background, including his actress wife Rebecca Romijn.
