Brad Pitt plays the lead role of a U.S. General Glen McMahon who has been sent to Afghanistan to 'clean up the situation' that has continued for an unintended duration of eight years. The General can be described as witty, but immensely quirky and odd, and faces a daunting and seemingly impossible task as the troops are unmotivated and in disarray. He must convince foreign governments to send more troops in order to label their mission success before all forces will withdraw by an upcoming deadline, while also facing betrayal from those closest to him and attempting to maintain a personal relationship with his family back in the States.

movie facts

Character Sean Cullen (played by actor Scoot McNairy) was based on Michael Hastings, the author of the novel from which the movie is based. The fictional and real-life persons shared the same career as a Rolling Stone journalist and, fittingly, serve as the narrator for the film. Many of the actors had worked together previously including Brad Pitt and Tilda Swinton, Brad Pitt and Topher Grace, Topher Grace and Josh Stewart, and several more. The movie was predominately filmed in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, rather than in Kabul, Afghanistan. A few scenes were also filmed in England at the Dunsfold Aerodrome.
