The film centers on the main characters of Tessa Connover, played by Katherine Heigl and Julia Banks, played by Rosario Dawson. Tessa Connover is the jilted ex-wife of David Connover, played by Geoff Stults. Although two years have passed since the divorce, Tessa becomes enraged when she learns that her ex-husband David is newly engaged to Julia and that Julia will be moving in with David and serving as the stepmother to her daughter Lily. Tessa is determined to break the couple up or get Julia out of the picture by any means necessary. She begins digging into Julia's past and in the process she finds out that Julia had taken a restraining order out against her ex-boyfriend and it is due to expire. Using this information, Tessa hatches a devious plot that takes the characters through a series of twists and turns that eventually lead to murder.

Unforgettable was originally set to be directed by Amma Asante with Kate Hudson and Kerry Washington playing the lead roles. Asante and Washington later dropped out of the film, giving producer Denise Di Novi the chance for her directorial debut. Shortly thereafter, Katherine Heigl and Rosario Dawson were cast in the lead roles. In one scene of the film, Tessa is shown looking through her old wedding photos on the computer. The photos are from Katherine Heigl's actual wedding with Josh Kelly, which is why the groom's face isn't shown in any of the photos.
