This film is based on the Pepsi Max commercials from 2012 that features Kyrie Irving as the titular character Uncle Drew, a former basketball legend. Dax, played by Lil Ray Howery, is a down-on-his-luck coach who desperately wants to play in the Rucker Classic for a chance at the cash prize, but his team is stolen by Mookie, played by Nick Kroll. Dax one day meets Uncle Drew and recruits him to play in the tournament for a chance at achieving a glory he never reached, and for Dax’s own chance at revenge. The pair must travel and recruit Uncle Drew’s old teammates.

movie facts

There are several references in the film to real-life events that happened to players, such as Chris Webber’s character Preacher being reminded that they have no timeouts left. This actually happened to Webber in the 1993 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship game against North Carolina. He tried to call a timeout when his team had none left and received a technical foul, playing no small part in the 73-71 loss. At one point, Kentucky coach John Calipari invites Uncle Drew to play for his team, but Uncle Drew tells him he’s more of a Blue Devils guy – a nod to the fact that Irving played at Duke before turning pro after one year.
