Acrimony tells the story of a vengeful woman named Melinda and her relationship with an engineer named Robert. The film follows the couple as they fall in love with one another in college and throughout their life as they grow older. But their relationship is not one filled with happily-ever-after moments as the couple falls on harder and harder times financially and romantically. Robert is an engineer and inventor who wants nothing more than to find an interested company to take him up on his newly designed and innovative battery, but as he finds difficulty in doing so, Melinda, who is supporting the both of them financially, becomes strained, both in terms of income and love for Robert. As their marriage falls apart, Melinda's sanity also falls into chaos, and that is the focus of the film's narrative. We see the movie begin in court, with Melinda already guilty of some criminal activity against Robert, and through her therapy and the rest of the film, we find out just how far Melinda will go in her anger toward Robert over what Melinda feels he has put her through. The movie explores themes of anger, jealousy, possessiveness, and a dramatic take on psychotic rage in a relationship falling apart.
