Critics panned the story, plot, characters, and performances, but did praise the special effects. Despite the terrible reviews, the film's box office take continued to fuel the franchise, with a direct sequel in 2017, Transformers: The Last Knight, and a soft reboot of the series with 2018's Bumblebee, which also is expected to have at least one sequel.
