movie facts

Though one of the films taglines is that it is 'Based on true events', this is a stretch of the truth. In fact, writer Bryan Bertino compiled stories that he heard as a child and adult and even tried to incorporate the randomness of crimes, such as the Manson family murders. The film is not in fact based on a true story or similar events. It took ten years for the film to finally be made, as it was originally announced soon after the release of The Strangers in 2008. There is also an unedited version with an alternate ending that critics recommend watching for true horror fans.
