movie facts

The initial hope was that this film would be the start of a series in the same vein as the Alex Cross or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, but that never materialized after poor reviews and a poor performance at the box office. Martin Scorsese was initially attached to direct the film, but he dropped out in 2013, long before it hit theaters. Scorsese still stayed on the production of the film as its executive producer. Val Kilmer plays a large role in this film, but all of his lines had to be dubbed. He later said in an interview that he was still healing from cancer surgery and his tongue was still swollen. Though the original novel is Norwegian, and the film was indeed mostly shot in the country, care was taken to remove any references to Norway throughout the film. None of the languages is spoken, and any items that would normally be written were changed.
