The Revenant follows Hugh Glass, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio, a frontiersman in North America in the year 1823 in the unorganized territory of North America as he guides trappers through the region when they were attacked by an Arikara war party. Glass helps the survivors of the attack to travel to Fort Kiowa, which is in modern-day South Dakota. One day, while hunting game, Glass is attacked by a vicious grizzly bear and left for dead. The group of trappers decides to leave Glass behind along with a couple of others to try to ensure his survival. In the end, Glass is left alone to survive in the wilderness after betrayal.

The Revenant is based on a true story of Hugh Glass. In the book, the backstory about Glass's Love for a Pawnee woman is a work of fiction. There is evidence to conclude that Glass may have indeed had such a relationship. In the film, Glass has a Pawnee son. However, the real Glass had no such son. Also, director Iñárritu hired several consultants during the production of the movie to ensure the accurate portrayal of Arikara and Pawnee languages.
