A group of adventurers seeks to destroy an accursed ring by bringing it deep into the territory of Sauron, the chief antagonist. A group of hobbits including Frodo, Sam, and the corrupted Gollum actually possess the ring, while a number of elves, humans, and dwarfs wage war in the background, hoping to distract Sauron to facilitate his ultimate defeat. The narrative gets quite complex, but this third movie in the trilogy details what happens when the hobbits make their final push to the potential place where the ring can be destroyed and the aftermath of what happens next.

movie facts

The visual aspects of this movie were rather ornate - relative to a typical movie of the same length, it included more than seven times the visual effects shots, and it supposedly has one of the largest film props ever made. Many extras were needed for the film's large battle scenes, and there were sometimes issues with them - women had to be cast as men in certain scenes, and the extras were so enthusiastic that they occasionally damaged their props. The usage of animal 'actors' also presented difficulties, as a number of situations arose in which the horses required for the movie almost injured themselves or other human actors, but most of these issues were avoided with careful planning.

about the movie

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is the final movie in the Lord of the Ring trilogy. Like the other movies in the series, it was directed by Peter Jackson. It was an ambitious movie that cost $100 million but made more than ten times that, making it roughly one of the top 30 highest-grossing movies ever, before inflation is considered. It also performed exceptionally well at the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes. General audiences felt similarly positive about the movie - it is consistently rated in the IMDB top ten.
