A man who is shipwrecked wakes up on a deserted island. He finds food and water for himself and creates a raft out of bamboo that he finds. As he attempts to leave the island, a sea creature destroys the raft, leaving him back on the island. He tries a second time and is stopped again. He tries a third time and is stopped yet again, this time meeting a giant red sea turtle in the water. When the man meets the turtle again, he tries to kill it and flips it upside-down. Later he realizes that what he did was cruel and returns to the turtle, but it is dead. The man sleeps next to the turtle, which splits overnight to reveal a woman inside the shell. The man creates a shelter for the two of them, and the woman wakes up and leaves. He finds her and they fall in love. Later, they have a son. The boy only knows of the island. A tsunami hits and the island is destroyed. The boy swims away from the island with a group of turtles. As the man and woman grow old, the man dies. The woman then transforms back into a turtle and returns to the ocean.
