movie facts

The Cannes Festival was established in 1946. Until the year 2002, it was called the International Film Festival. The annual film festival is held in Cannes, France and previews films of all genres from around the world. The festival is by invitation only and is considered one of the 'Big Three' film festivals with Venice Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival making the trio. The films that are allowed to be shown during the festival are carefully selected by the Festival's board of directors. The decision is made by a jury whose only responsibility is to choose which films will receive an award. The Meyerowitz Stories stirred up a bit of controversy over its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The jury for the Cannes Film Festival felt that the films which are shown at their festivals should be focused on films that are made for the big screen and said they would like to 'commit itself to be distributed in French movie theatres'. Netflix has been essentially blocked from entering at future festivals as a French law blocks films from being shown on streaming devices for the 36 months following their theater release.
