On a mission in Mars, a team of astronauts get hit by an unpredicted storm. During the evacuation, Mark Watney, one of the mission’s crew members, is hit by a projectile. The rest of his crew is forced to leave him on the assumption that he died. However, Watney survives, and now stranded alone on Mars, employs his ingenuity to ensure his survival – cultivating food and scavenging parts from previous missions – until the next scheduled Mars mission will arrive. NASA as well as a team of international scientists work to bring him home. Watney’s crewmates also plot a daring rescue mission.

movie facts

Many spacecrafts have been sent to Mars, with only one out of three missions being successful. The first Martian missions were flybys where spacecrafts would fly close to the planet and take passing images. It was in 1971 that the Soviet space program succeeded in landing a lander vehicle on the Red Planet’s surface. The Mars 3 orbited around the planet, transmitting eight months of data involving topography, atmosphere, weather, and geology. NASA’s Mariner 9 followed, transmitting more detailed data about the atmosphere, mapping Mars’s surface, and more images. The most famous Martian missions, Mars exploration rovers Spirit and Opportunity, landed on opposite sides of the planet in January 2004. These rovers continue to operate past their operational window of 90 days.
