movie facts

The movie’s animators were so impressed by the performance of Jeremy Irons, that they actually worked some of Irons’ features into the face of Scar. The names of many of the characters are based on actual Swahili words. Simba means lion, Nala means gift, Pumbaa means friend, and Rafiki means mirage. The success of the movie spawned the creation of three different Lion King video games. A CGI remake of the original movie is currently in production and set to be released on July 19, 2019. The Lion King remained the highest grossing animated film of all time for an impressive 26 years, before finally being surpassed by Toy Story 3 in 2010. It does, however, remain the highest grossing two-dimensional film of all-time.
