The film follows a 12-year-old boy named Aang, played by Noah Ringer, who is (unbeknownst to most) the last in a long line of Avatars. He is trying to become the master of all the four elements and must stop the Fire Nation who wish to conquer the world and enslave the citizens of the Water Tribes and the Earth Kingdom. The plot loosely follows the first season of the animated television series.

movie facts

The film had controversy from the start, with the predominantly East Asian and Inuit characters of the Avatar universe being played by white actors. Not only that, but the villains were cast as minorities, which is the racial opposite of what is depicted in the original show. This triggered accusations of racism, despite M. Night Shyamalan being of Indian heritage. Shyamalan was faced with letter-writing campaigns and protests throughout the development of the film. It went so far as a boycott being urged by the Media Action Network, which was a first in the 18-year history of the organization. The decisions were defended by Paramount which pointed out that of the 23 credited speaking roles, more than half were performed by Asian actors.
