Jeanette Walls lives with her family: her abusive, alcoholic father Rex, her artistic and self-centered mother Rose, and her three siblings: older sister Lori, only boy Brian, and baby sister Maureen. Her parents are very dysfunctional and live in poverty, often moving them from place to place. The children live in filth and are not cared for well by their parents. The children live in fear of their father's drunken rages and their mother's lack of care for them. In flashbacks, it is shown that Jeanette is the voice of reason for the family. Once the family is broke, they return to Rex's hometown in West Virginia. There he makes grandiose plans to build a glass castle that will run on solar power. Rex hopes that the children will be so enamored by the idea that they will be distracted from their terrible surroundings, including not having any electricity in the shack where they live. Rex, however, cannot stay sober long enough to make his plans happen in the real world. After Jeanette grows up, moves to New York, and becomes engaged, her parents express to her their disappointment over what she's become.
