Gotham City has a new district attorney, Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), who joins forces with Batman (Christian Bale) to end crime in the city. A new criminal, the Joker (Heath Ledger), comes to Gotham City and holds up a bank, then uses the money to attack Gotham City and its people, creating chaos in the city. Batman uses his personal business connections to find the origin of the Joker while Dent, Police Commissioner James Gordon (Gary Oldman), and Assistant District Attorney Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal) use the resources of law enforcement to find a way to stop the crime wave and its mastermind. Batman also finds himself embroiled in a love triangle between himself, Rachel Dawes, and Harvey Dent. Both Batman and Dent fight to stop the Joker's crime wave which becomes intensely personal for Batman, making him reconsider all of his assumptions about himself and whether he is a crime fighter or a vigilante.

The Joker was Heath Ledger's last completed film role. Soon after he filmed his scenes and six months before the film's release, he died of a toxic overdose of multiple prescription drugs on January 22, 2008. After his death, there were questions as to whether the film would be able to continue, but the producers made a statement saying that Ledger had completed all of his scenes and that the film's release would not be affected by his death.
