Jeff Bridges plays Jeffrey Lebowski, who is also known as the 'Dude,' a bowler and lifetime slacker. He is assaulted as a case of mistaken identity and the real millionaire Jeffrey Lebowski’s wife is kidnapped. There is much debate on whether the trophy wife was really kidnapped or run away. The millionaire wishes for Jeff and his friends to deliver the ransom in hopes of identifying the kidnappers. Dude wants to keep the ransom money, and it happens to be stolen along with Dude’s car in the end.

The Coen Brothers actually based the Dude on a real guy named Jeff Dowd, who helped them with the success of their film, Blood Simple. Both Steve Buscemi and John Goodman have appeared in six of the Coen Brothers movies including The Big Lebowski. First held in 2002 in Louisville, Kentucky “Lebowski Fest” has since been held in over 30 cities multiple times each year, sometimes even the stars of the movie make an appearance. The Dude has his own store in New York City named the Little Lebowski Shop that solely sells memorabilia from the movie.
