The plot of the movie follows the events of the original Star Wars film trilogy and involves a new cast of characters to the franchise, as well as several returning characters from previous films, with their respective actors returning to those roles. Daisy Ridley stars as a young woman named Rey, stranded on the backwater desert planet of Jakku, trying to make ends meet, and desperately dreaming of an adventure and a better life for herself. Meanwhile, a struggle for galactic power is being waged in the stars, with the evil overlord Kylo Ren seeking the location of the heroic Jedi Luke Skywalker, so that he may kill him and return full control of the galaxy to the remnants of the Galactic Empire, now known as the First Order. Through a series of events, Rey finds herself rescued from her quiet life on Jakku and swept up into a fight against Kylo Ren and his First Order, for the safety of the galaxy and all of its people. The movie continues in the tradition of the series by featuring swashbuckling space adventures, colorful characters, and bombastic action sequences.

Much of the primary cast of the film, and by extension the planned trilogy, is made up of relatively unknown actors, as well as writers new to the series. Disney hopes to create a brand new vision for the Star Wars series for a new audience while retaining the magic at the core of the beloved franchise.

The movie stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher. It is the seventh film in the long-running Star Wars film series and marks the beginning of a new trilogy of movies, following a new plot arc after the events of the original film saga. It is also the first film in the franchise to be produced and distributed by Walt Disney Studios, following their purchase of the intellectual property and the Lucasfilm production company from series creator George Lucas.
