When criminals lay siege to the tallest skyscraper in the world and set it ablaze, U.S. Marine war veteran and retired FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader Will Sawyer must rescue his family trapped inside the building.
Skyscraper was first announced on May 26, 2016, after Legendary Entertainment successfully won a wage of a bidding war for a Chinese-set action adventure film. Thurber was attached to the project as the film's scriptwriter, director, and producer. Skyscraper is Thurber’s first foray into a non-comedy film. Beau Flynn was also on board with the project as Thurber’s co-producer, through his Flynn Picture Company. Johnson, through his Seven Bucks Productions, also had production rights to the film. Skyscraper was released on July 13, 2018, in the U.S. by Universal Pictures. It earned a total of $304 million worldwide against a production budget of $125 million. Despite its stunning commercial success, the film was received with mixed reactions. Some praised Johnson’s gripping performance and edge-of-your-seat scenes but criticized the cliched and familiar screenplay. Neve Campbell was announced to star in the film on June 22, 2017. She plays the role of Sarah Sawyer, Johnson’s character’s wife. Maggie Q, Rachel Bilson, Jaimie Alexander, and Mira Sorvino were also considered for the role. Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes assigned the film an approval rating of 46%. On Metacritic, the film holds a score of 51/100. Market research firm CinemaScore’s poll revealed an average score of B+.
