Shrek, the titular character played by Mike Myers, is an ogre who lives alone in the swamp and generally enjoys being undisturbed and left to his own devices. One day, things are upended when Lord Farquaad, voiced by John Lithgow, exiles a bunch of fairytale creatures to Shrek’s swamp. This solitude-threatening annoyance angers Shrek, and he sets off to find Farquaad in an attempt to get them exiled elsewhere. The only creature willing to guide Shrek on his journey to the castle is Donkey, played by Eddie Murphy, so he is reluctantly brought along.

movie facts

Shrek was originally recorded as having Mike Myers’ traditional accent, and then a more country-Canadian accent, but the actor decided that the recording fell a bit flat. In a move that would propel Shrek into our hearts – and many top ten lists – and cost the studio an additional four million dollars, he re-recorded all of his lines with the now-infamous Scottish accent, which is based on childhood bedtime stories read to him by his mother. You can still hear the original voice in the bonus material on the DVDs. There are many allusions to Disney and other fairytale characters throughout the film, despite this being a DreamWorks project. There were some concerns that Disney would sue over the references, so prior to release, the movie was reviewed by DreamWorks’ lawyers before it got the all-clear.
