Rosemary's Baby tells the story of a pregnant woman who believes that a Satanic cult wants to use her baby for their evil purposes. Rosemary Woodhouse and her husband Guy Woodhouse move into a new apartment building, despite a friend's warning of the building's links to cannibalism and murder. After moving in, the couple quickly becomes friends with an elderly couple that lives nearby, the Castevets. The wife, Minnie, gives Rosemary a necklace that she says is a good luck charm and Rosemary notes the unusual smell of it. Rosemary and Guy decide to have a baby, but on the night they plan to conceive Rosemary has a vision of being raped by a demon. Shortly after, Rosemary learns that she is pregnant and goes to see Dr. Abraham Sapirstein on the recommendation of the Castevets. After a series of disconcerting events, Rosemary comes to believe that her neighbors and Dr. Sapirstein are part of a Satanic cult along with her husband. She begins to fear the child that she is carrying and what will happen after it is born.

movie facts

Though the role of Rosemary is one of Mia Farrow's most well-known, she was not director Roman Polanski's original choice. He almost cast his then-fiancee Sharon Tate and also considered Tuesday Weld for the role, but decided a more well-known actress was needed for the lead part. Farrow's taking the role ended up leading to the demise of her marriage to Frank Sinatra, who demanded that she give up her career when they wed. Sinatra served Farrow with divorce papers on the set of the movie, leading Farrow to almost drop out. She was eventually convinced to stay on by a producer who assured her that she was a shoo-in for an Academy Award for her role.
