Robin of Loxley is drafted to war for a few years, and while he is gone, his town becomes infested with corrupt leadership, led by the Sheriff of Nottingham. When Robin returns home, he learns of all this betrayal, and John, played by Jamie Foxx, trains Robin in order to overthrow the corrupt government and restore his land. The movie follows a recent trend in making old children's tales into a more gritty, mature, action-oriented movie. Another notable film that did this recently was King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. Coincidentally, that film did not perform well either.
