Dr. William Rodman tests a drug on chimpanzees in order to help find a cure for Alzheimer's disease. One chimp, Bright Eyes shows increased intelligence but then riots, forcing the researchers to kill her. Rodman's boss ends the project, but he keeps Caesar, the baby chimp that Bright Eyes gave birth to after she was given the drug. Caesar has the intelligence that his mother had due to receiving the drug in utero. Caesar grows up and learns of his origins. Due to fighting, he is sent to a primate shelter. He befriends the other apes there and claims the top position in the group. Caesar gets a more advanced version of the drug he took and gives it to all the apes, enhancing their intelligence. They flee the shelter and free the apes in the local zoo. The apes fight with the humans for control of the city.
