The all-female acapella group The Barden Bellas is a young group of singers that are known for their upbeat pop songs and near perfect looks. After losing the finals the year before, the ladies are dead set to win this year. A new recruit, Beca is a DJ with little interest in the college lifestyle. After meeting a man from the opposing all-male acapella group, Beca finds herself refreshed and rejuvenated. Beca then takes it upon herself to breathe a new life into her group and revives them just in time to get them back into the competition.

Every member of the cast actually had to sing a song as part of their audition. Rebel Wilson used the song Edges of Glory by Lady Gaga. Adam DeVine went with the Family Matter theme song. After this, the cast went to a month-long song and dance boot camp to brush up their performing skills. Kelley Jakle, who played Jessica, was an actual ICCA-winner in 2008 and 2010 with the USC SoCal Vocals. In addition to this, anytime Anna Kendrick is found singing alone in the film she was recorded live on the scene. Kendrick felt something was lost when using recordings.
