Anderson drew inspiration from several sources for Phantom Thread. He did not have enough knowledge on the couture industry prior to making the film. He first found delight in the fashion industry upon reading about the late Spanish Basque fashion designer and founder of the Balenciaga fashion house, Cristóbal Balenciaga Eizaguirre. Anderson described Cristóbal Balenciaga’s life as monastic. He said the driving force of Cristóbal Balenciaga’s life was his work, so Anderson thought of centering his film on what could disrupt this kind of lifestyle: romance. The lead character, Reynolds Woodcock, is loosely based on one of the 20th century powerhouses in the fashion industry, Charles James. James is an English-American fashion designer best known for his ballgowns. Phantom Thread premiered on December 11, 2017, at the Walter Reade Theater in New York City. It was officially released in theaters in the U.S. on December 25, 2017. It generally had a positive reception for the performances, its screenplay, direction, musical score, costume design, and production values. The National Board of Review selected it as one of the top ten films of 2017. Phantom Thread earned Day-Lewis a nomination for Best Actor at the 90th Academy Awards. Lesley Manville also snagged a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the film at the same ceremony.
