Screenwriter Kinberg first conceptualized the premise of the film after listening to a couple of his friends who were undertaking marriage counseling. He described the therapy as one that is fraught with hostility. Mr. & Mrs. Smith was officially released in theaters on June 10, 2005, by 20th Century Fox in the U.S. and Canada in more than 3,000 theaters. It garnered $480 million worldwide against a production budget of $110 million. It received a generally favorable reception. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith earned a score of 59% based on 210 reviews. Its critical consensus praised the onscreen chemistry of Pitt and Jolie, saying that it enjoyably compensates for the poor writing of the screenplay. On Metacritic, Mr. & Mrs. Smith gained an average rating of 55/100. Market research firm CinemaScore’s poll of audiences resulted in a score of B+. The film received backlash from the government of Colombia over its inaccurate depiction of Bogotá as a tiny village with a hot and humid climate situated within a forest. The mayor and the president during the time invited the film’s lead cast and producers to Bogotá to show their erroneous portrayal of the city.
