Manchester by the Sea was first conceived by Matt Damon and John Krasinski, who had discussed an idea about an emotionally embattled jack-of-all-trades and then pitched it to Lonergan. Both actors were set to work on the film, but they became inundated with other projects. Lonergan worked on the screenplay for three years. Damon read a rough draft of the script and instantly liked it. He demanded Lonergan to direct the film, with himself as part of the cast. Damon had previously built a professional relationship with Lonergan in 2011 for Margaret. Their collaboration for the pre-production began on September 8, 2014. However, Damon had to drop the project due to conflicts in his schedule. In December of the same year, Casey Affleck announced that he was set to replace Damon in the lead cast, to which Damon strongly agreed. Damon even stated that Affleck was the only one in his mind to replace him. Michelle Williams officially joined the cast as the lead character’s wife on January 9, 2015. Kyle Chandler became attached to the project as the lead character’s older brother on February 24. Two months later, Lucas Hedges joined the project. Lonergan initially expressed that, although Hedges’ audition for the role was excellent, he had apprehensions about casting him due to his background in real life, which is so distant from that of the character. But according to Lonergan, Hedges was ultimately commendable.
