movie facts

Though this movie takes place at the Central Park Zoo, none of the animals portrayed in the movie except penguins are actually housed at this zoo in real life. This movie was originally planned to be based on a group of activists liberating the animal characters from their cages, but the plot was changed later on. All of the jungles in the movie portraying Madagascar were actually based on the paintings of Henri Rousseau. A lot of scenes from this movie portray homages to the classic Twilight Zone series. Gloria the Hippo was originally supposed to be pregnant as the result of a zoo's breeding program, but this was changed as it may have resulted in the film being rated as PG-13.
